Final Draft FDX
FDX is Final Draft’s XML interchange format — the de facto professional exchange format for screenplays, and the safest bridge to and from industry tooling.
What it carries
- paragraph types, formatting runs, scene numbers and dual dialogue
- revision sets with colors and revision marks
- title pages and script notes
What it can't represent
- the XML dialect is Final Draft’s own; third-party files are compatible, not endorsed
- some production metadata (e.g., tagging) has no representation in text formats
Where it came from
Introduced with Final Draft 8, FDX replaced the binary .fdw format so scripts could move between Final Draft and other tools as structured XML.
